Some people have placed a lot of faith in cryptocurrency while others believe it is doomed to fail. Still others have no opinion on it. It’s simply not something they’ve given much thought to.

If your spouse seems to have suddenly got very interested in it, then the reason might be innocent or it could be motivated by something else – the desire to cheat you out of money in a divorce. If your marriage has been on rocky ground lately, a sudden interest in cryptocurrency might be worth investigating.

Using cryptocurrency to hide assets in a divorce

If you divorce, you will both need to create a list of all your assets. This list forms the basis for the property division process. If something is not on that list, then it probably won’t be divided as you can only divide what you know about.

Hence some spouses look for ways to hide assets when a divorce is coming. Cryptocurrency has become a popular way to do this because it is very hard for anyone other than the person making that investment to trace it and access it.

If you suspect your spouse may have been up to this you may need to bring in someone with the appropriate knowledge to help you check for any undeclared cryptocurrency investments. You may also need help to learn about what legal options you have to gain your fair share of any undisclosed asset you do discover. Or at least to get something equivalent in value.
