Social media during divorce can present complications

People use social media on a daily basis, but there are times when staying on these platforms isn’t a good idea. One of those is when you’re going through a divorce. Some people choose to stay off social media completely until their marriage is legally dissolved, but that’s not always possible.

If you choose to remain on social media during your divorce, you need to carefully consider your actions on every platform. Remembering these points may help you if you decide to stay active online.

Consider how things will be perceived

Perception has to be at the center of every decision you make about what you share on social media. You have to think about how your ex, their legal representation and the court may perceive what you post. It’s possible that you may think something is innocent, but it might be used against you. For example, if you post a picture of yourself on a yacht, your ex may claim that you’re hiding assets or providing false information. The truth might be that you went to a boat show and snapped a picture that you posted because you liked the way you looked in it.

Remember that everything is permanent

Some people think that they can simply delete things if they realize that they shouldn’t have posted them. While it’s true that you can delete posts, you won’t know for sure that what you posted wasn’t captured in screenshots. These screenshots could be shared with your ex, which could be used in the case against you. Even if you have your privacy settings as secure as possible, it’s still possible that the information will be captured and shared.

It’s critical that you take steps to protect yourself throughout your divorce. One way to do this is to discuss your online activities with someone who’s familiar with these situations. Working with someone who can assist you throughout the divorce might be beneficial.
